Who Would Be Bachman's Career Ending "Sargent Shriver" VP?

Here is a basic outline of the history of how the Democratic nominee for president in 1972 George McGovern ended up with Sargent Shriver as his vice-presidential running mate.

So disastrous were McGovern's chances of winning the presidential election after the convention that six potential VP's he approached turned him down (including Ted Kennedy). Shriver's only real claim to fame (his role in the Peace Corps not being part of the national conciousness to any major degree) was his being a Kennedy relative at a time when the Kennedy mystique had major cachet still.

The vice presidential vote

With hundreds of delegates either actively supporting Nixon or angry at McGovern for one reason or another, the vote was chaotic, with at least three other candidates having their names put into nomination and votes scattered over 70 candidates The eventual winner was Senator Thomas Eagleton, who accepted the nomination despite not personally knowing McGovern very well, and privately disagreeing with many of McGovern's policies.

The vice presidential balloting went on so long that McGovern and Eagleton were forced to make their acceptance speeches at around three in the morning, local time.

After the convention ended, it was discovered that Eagleton had undergone psychiatric electroshock therapy for depression, and had concealed this information from McGovern. A Time magazine poll taken at the time found that 77 percent of the respondents said "Eagleton's medical record would not affect their vote." Nonetheless, the press made frequent references to his 'shock therapy', and McGovern feared that this would detract from his campaign platform.

McGovern subsequently consulted confidentially with preeminent psychiatrists, including Eagleton's own doctors, who advised him that a recurrence of Eagleton's depression was possible and could endanger the country should Eagleton become president. McGovern had initially claimed that he would back Eagleton “1000 percent,” only to ask Eagleton to withdraw three days later. This perceived indecisiveness was disastrous for the McGovern campaign.

After a week in which six prominent Democrats publicly refused the vice presidential nomination, Sargent Shriver, brother-in-law to John, Robert and Ted Kennedy, former Ambassador to France, and former Director of the Peace Corps, finally accepted. He was officially nominated by a special session of the Democratic National Committee. By this time, McGovern's poll ratings had plunged from 41 to 24 percent.

Should the the strange confluence of events that propelled McGovern, the most incompetent major party campaigner in US presidential history except, perhaps, Horace Greeley, to the nomination be repeated, and Michele Bachman is the GOP's nominee then the question of who would wish to be tied to that sinking ship as VP candidate would arise.

"In the end, Senator George McGovern succeeded in winning the nomination by winning primaries through grassroots support in spite of establishment opposition."

There is, of course, the possibility that if the economy was so terrible that anyone could win for the GOP. Thus Bachman might, but such an economic situation would have to be at a Hooverish level. So bad and so obviously incompetent was McGovern, that even with a massive war going on, and a crook in the White House Nixon won in a landslide.

With a Bachman candidacy, and the almost certain prospect of an Obama re-election by a massive margin, which of the prospective 2016 candidates would possibly wish to enter that campaign having been part of a team which was massively rejected in the previous election? The history of such candidates succeeding in later elections e.g. Shriver, Ferraro, Smith, Kemp, Mondale, Bentsen, is not promising.

Would Romney give up his probable last shot in 2016 to be Bachman's running mate? Pawlenty ? Perry? A Bachman/Santorum team seems improbable, if not downright suicidal. Bachman and Palin is inconceivable. Would Rubio or West throw away their long term chances on such a chimera?

The only current candidate I could envisage teaming up with Bachman would be Herman Cain which, like Ferraro's choice by Mondale, would have considerable "talking  points" media coverage as the first female presidential nominee allied with the first GOP Black VP choice. But, like Ferraro this would be, I suspect, a one month wonder until underlying currents asserted themselves-not the least being such an inexperienced team being offered to the voters.

Not having a well known vice-presidential candidate is not necessarily an impediment to election, but since nobody from the House of Representatives since Garfield has been elected to the presidency, the experience question, especially in Cain's case would not help Bachman to say the least.

Bachman would have enough on her plate with her past statements on numerous subjects getting a wider airing, her difficulty with the GLB community, and her lack of executive and international experience. Not having a viable running mate, and especially if many possible companions were seen to reject the offer, as with McGovern's sad searchings, would add substantially to her burdens.

Hippie/Radical Imagery From McGovern's '72 Campaign In Campaign Buttons

Presidential campaign buttons evoke more than just the slogans of a particular election they bring an evocative feeling for times through their artwork and particular emphasis on issues, particularly as the effect a vocal segment of the population-where would you see a bare breasted "liberated ladies" presidential button nowadays?

Contrast the staid, but beautiful in their art imagery, conservatism of Democrat Alton B Parker's 1904 campaign (but note the retro copy of Parker's third button by McGovern's first button) with the Democrat McGovern's "peace and love' art style buttons of the radical 1970's.

The McGovern images also evoke a feeling of nostalgia, along with "what on earth was I thinking" in folks like myself who lived through the time and are now a recovering liberal. This is especially interesting emotionally as, in retrospect the choice was between one of the most incompetent candidates of all time versus one of the most intellectually corrupt.

At the end of the day these campaign items are enjoyable for their artwork and as a window into America's past . One thing never changes however, look at the long list of Hollywood actors and singers supporting the Democratic party in the last image below.

Palin's Power Poll Day;One Point Behind Romney In YouGov,2nd In WashPost And Blitzes 6K Vote Hot Air Poll

The latest YouGov Poll has Sarah Palin only one point behind putative leader Mitt Romney and, significantly, also ahead of current media darling Michele Bachman. I twill be interesting to see the next poll as Bachman has had some headwinds in the last few days which have been reflected in the Hot Air poll result below.

Romney 14%
Palin 13%
Bachmann 12%
Perry 12%
Cain 9%
Giuliani 4%
Santorum 4%
Paul 4%
Gingrich 4%
Pawlenty 2%
Huntsman 2%

YouGov looks at the GOP possible candidates in another way and Palin and Bachman tie for the lead but-significantly Palin's support is stronger amongst the non-Tea party element showing she can attract a wider audience and more than Bachman from the majority element in the party.
If you had to choose one, which of these individuals would you want to be the Republican nominee for president in 2012?

In the 6000 vote+ Hot Air Poll taken on July 4th Sarah Palin blitzed the field with 36.94% compared to rising media star Michele Bachman coming in a distant second on 19.95%.

This poll is relevant as they have strict one person one vote guidelines and although most on line polls are suspect the Hot Air one seems the most stringent and is at the very least a guide to GOP voters thinking-which voters are after all the only ones who count in the nomination process.

After  some further weeks of intense media coverage of Bachman-which in latter days has been very negative as her history of her and her husband's Gay unfriendly statements and revelations of her health issues plus the satirists cranking up have shown, once again, the rapid rise and fall of these media darlings.

In the new poll out today of, again, 6000+ votes Palin has actually increased her lead to a stratospheric, given the amount of competitors in the poll, level of 38%. Bachman on the other hand has experienced a near 50% drop in her support to 10%-it must be somewhat amusing for Palin to watch these media darlings rise and fall whilst she contemplates running, on the current trends, if she does run, it appears that a classic left/right Palin/Romney showdown will determine the nominee.

In a telling result the Palin/Bachman "head to head" result for the July 4th poll was Palin 52.18% and Bachman 47.80%. The new poll has it Palin 62% and Bachman 38% sic transit Bachman.

As for Perry, the new, bright shiny media star he has gone up, albeit slightly to second place, but still way behind Palin. However, if he enters the race look for his quick ascent as the "anti-Romney" and "sensible alternative to Palin on the right" until he garners the close attention of the media.

There is of course one potential candidate who will have no problems with media scrutiny and sensational revelations as everything that could possible be thrown at her has been done so and she is still standing and, with these who were polled, the preferred candidate-makes sense.

Wonkette's Commentators Use Allen West "the Plantation Republican" To Launch Racist Comments

Showing that the progressive commitment to a new dialogue, to anti-racism to common decency is a sham, and exposing that when it comes to supporting  the re-election of President Obama the left will play the "Uncle Tom" card against any Black politician who stands in their way, the well known leftist  Blog "Wonkette"  includes this description of Republican congressman Allen West (who represents the Florida 22nd congressional district and is described as R- Plantation") quoting a report by McClatchy;

"In his verbal explosion, the Plantation Republican suggested his beef with Wasserman Schultz began in October 2010 and “the disgusting protest you ordered at my campaign” headquarters in Deerfield Beach, West said in his email."

This because West a Republican from Florida, had the temerity to take, exception to Dem Wasserman Schulz character, and said so in strong, but dignified language.

The language itself, being alien to the ears of progressives, also came  under childish attack, but it was the disgusting flow of racist invective which the commentators threw at West, which shows the left has no shame and will use the race card to call, in effect, all Black Republicans, Steele, Cain, and West as examples, "Uncle Tom's" and visible tokens used to mask Republican racism-when clearly it is the Dem supporters who are the racists and hypocrites.

Wonkette is of course infamous for their disgusting attack they levelled against Sarah Palin's mentally challenged son Trig for which they lost nearly all their sponsors and had to make a craven apology-hopefully the same will follow their latest piece of  posting disgusting.

Just Some remarks from Wonkette's commentators:

"Oh, Jesus Christ. This tool owes his election to the GOPs desperate attempt to find as many "black friends" as they can. He makes Michael Steele look like a friggin' Nobel laureate. "

"Suddenly my attitude toward lynchings has experienced a certain softening..."

"Being a black republican is one long stint of disrespectin' yourself. No wonder they are always in such a snit."

"It was preferable to his preferred moniker, "House Nigger."
"The fact that there's actually a town called "Plantation", in 2011, is yet another bit of proof that the Southerners claiming they just support "their heritage" and not slavery is total BS. And no Mr. West, you can be the best house negro ever and they will still think you're inferior."
